Bicentenary of Royal Botananical Gardens (Sydney)


Bi-Centenary of Royal Botanic Gardens (Sydney), opened 13 June 1816
Oldest Scientific Institution in Australia and one of most important historic botanical institution in the world.

Sydney 1st Zoo was located at the Botanic Garden from 1879 to 1883.
Garden Palace built in 1879, held the International Exhibition in 1879, burn down in 1882.
In 1959, the title of 'Royal' was granted to the Sydney Botanic Gardens.
The gardens are managed by the Royal Botanic Gardens & Domain Trust, established in 1980 which also manage the Mount Tomah Botanic Garden (cold climate plants specialist garden) and Mount Annan Botanic Garden (Native Australian plants specialist garden).
The Garden is divided into four major precincts called the Lower Gardens, the Middle Gardens, the Palace Gardens and the Bennelong precinct, the centre of the Garden host the Palm Grove.
The Royal Botanic Gardens was for decades home to a colony of native Grey-headed Flying Foxes, a species of fruit bat. The colony estimated to be over 20,000 strong was move out of the garden in 2012.
