Sir Stamford Raffles arrived in Singapore on 28th January 1819 and soon recognised the island as a natural choice for a new port.
On the 6th of February 1819 modern Singapore was founded as a British colony
Raffles signed a treaty with the Sultan Hussein Shah of Johor, establishing Singapore as a trading post of the British East India Company
