HMAS Sydney I engaged and destroyed SMS Emden off Cocos (Keeling) Islands on 9th November 1914 in the RAN major naval engagement More info: The Battle of Cocos took place on 9 November 1914 during World War I off the Cocos (Keeling) Islands, in the north east Indian Ocean. The German light cruiser SMS Emden attacked the British cable station on Direction Island and was engaged several hours later by HMAS Sydney I, an Australian light cruiser.
