Fort Denison aka Pinchgut Island
(also called Rock Island and Malle'wonya)
Former penal site and defensive facility occupying a small island located in Sydney Harbour

1788 - 1796: Island is quarried from it's sandstone rock to build Cicular Quay.
1796: Installation of a gibbet on Pinchgut Island (for execution by hanging of penal prisoners).
1839 - 1857: Fort construction as part of Sydney Harbour Inner Defences (with Martello Tower).
1906: Saluting Gun is transferred to Fort Denison.
1913: Lighthouse is installed on top of roof of Martello Tower.
1942: Japanese attack on Sydney Harbour by midget submarines caused light damage to Fort Denison.
1992 - present: the island is now a museum.
